While these signs can be caused by many common conditions, they can also be early indicators of <strong data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"506\">acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)<\/strong>, a fast-developing type of blood cancer that requires urgent treatment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d97635f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d97635f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>AML is <strong data-start=\"587\" data-end=\"595\">rare<\/strong>, with around <strong data-start=\"609\" data-end=\"658\">3,100 new cases diagnosed each year in the UK<\/strong>, and it mainly affects <strong data-start=\"682\" data-end=\"698\">older adults<\/strong>, especially those over <strong data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"728\">75<\/strong>. It develops in specific myeloid white blood cells \u2014 including monocytes and granulocytes \u2014 which normally protect the body from infection.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-088cc30 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"088cc30\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Key symptoms to look out for<\/h3>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bf3b78a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bf3b78a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"870\" data-end=\"998\">Symptoms often come on over a few weeks and worsen with time. Speak to your GP if you notice:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1252\"><li data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1038\"><p data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1038\">Unusual or persistent <strong data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1036\">paleness<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1098\"><p data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1098\">Feeling <strong data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1057\">weak<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1072\">exhausted<\/strong>, or <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1096\">short of breath<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1099\" data-end=\"1126\"><p data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1126\"><strong data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1124\">Frequent infections<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1127\" data-end=\"1195\"><p data-start=\"1129\" data-end=\"1195\"><strong data-start=\"1129\" data-end=\"1153\">Unexplained bruising<\/strong> or bleeding (nosebleeds, bleeding gums)<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1233\"><p data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1233\"><strong data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1213\">Weight loss<\/strong> you can\u2019t explain<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1252\"><p data-start=\"1236\" data-end=\"1252\"><strong data-start=\"1236\" data-end=\"1252\">Night sweats<\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1254\" data-end=\"1438\">The NHS stresses that in most cases, these symptoms <strong data-start=\"1306\" data-end=\"1318\">will not<\/strong> be caused by leukaemia but they <strong data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1363\">should<\/strong> be checked. Early consultation often means fewer tests and faster answers.<\/p><p data-start=\"1440\" data-end=\"1705\"><strong data-start=\"1440\" data-end=\"1468\">Diagnosis and next steps<\/strong><br data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1471\" \/>If your GP suspects a problem after routine blood tests, you\u2019ll be urgently referred to a <strong data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1578\">haematologist<\/strong> for specialist investigations and, if needed, treatment. Acting quickly gives people the best chance of receiving timely care.<\/p><p data-start=\"1707\" data-end=\"1833\">If you or your child notice any of these symptoms, don\u2019t wait, <strong data-start=\"1771\" data-end=\"1790\">contact your GP<\/strong>.
