Many forms of blood cancer are characterized by problems in the bone marrow; for example,\u00a0myeloma is defined\u00a0by the abnormal growth of immune cells called plasma cells in this spongy tissue.<\/p><p>A bone marrow transplant, also known as a hematopoietic stem cell transplant, is a procedure that aims to wipe out a patient\u2019s existing bone marrow stem cells and replace them with stem cells from a healthy donor. For people with certain blood cancers, this procedure can be curative, eliminating cancer cells and allowing the body to make a fresh supply of new healthy blood cells.<\/p><p>For a bone transplant to be performed safely, the patient and their donor must be closely matched on a panel of genetic variants that affect how immune cells recognize threats. Without this matching, the donated cells are likely to either not implant properly or produce immune cells that attack the rest of the body\u2019s healthy tissue.<\/p><p><strong>Over 70% of patients don\u2019t have matching family member donors<\/strong><\/p><p>Finding an appropriate donor can be a major hurdle and 70% of people who need a bone marrow transplant do not have a matching donor in their family.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-35a4897 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"35a4897\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Despite over 44 million registered donors worldwide, the number of new and active donors is declining sharply.<\/p><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9f47f5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d9f47f5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Why This Matters<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9582600 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9582600\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\"><div class=\"elementor-widget-container\"><p>For many people with blood cancer, a stem cell transplant is their only hope.
