My name\u2019s\u00a0Nidahl,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a024, and my world turned upside down in January when\u00a0my amazing mum Zeinab<\/strong>\u00a0was diagnosed with\u00a0acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).\u00a0She\u2019s having her second round of chemo at the moment and as soon as she\u2019s strong enough, she\u2019ll\u00a0need a stem cell transplant<\/strong>\u00a0to survive.\u00a0<\/p>

But my mum is Eritrean and I was so shocked to discover that this might make it\u00a0harder for her to find a matching stem cell donor<\/strong>. Apparently if you\u2019re from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic background, you\u2019re more likely to have a\u00a0rare tissue type\u00a0<\/strong>than someone from a white northern European background, so you\u2019re less likely to find a fully matched donor on the UK stem cell register.\u00a0<\/p>

That\u2019s why I\u2019m urgently appealing for more people with\u00a0Black, African and Caribbean heritage<\/strong>\u00a0to sign up to the register. It might seem small but to me it\u2019s everything, because it\u2019s the chance of a lifetime with my mum. Finding a stem cell match requires very specific genetic compatibility. Because genetic markers vary significantly across ethnic groups, patients from minority backgrounds face much slimmer odds.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
