I was doing Zumba, I was constantly on my feet and then suddenly, out of nowhere, I couldn\u2019t even walk down the stairs without getting out of breath,\u201d she said.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">More than a decade later, Anie is now sharing her story to encourage more people from South Asian and Black communities to join the\u00a0<span class=\"n6NlI\">UK stem cell donor register<\/span>.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">After weeks of feeling unwell, Anie\u2019s father insisted she get a blood test. That same night, doctors arrived at her family home in the early hours of the morning.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cActually, that night, at three o\u2019clock in the morning, we had a doctor show up to the house with flashing lights and saying that I need to go to hospital now because it is a life or death situation,\u201d she said.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Doctors soon confirmed she had leukaemia.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cMy dad was stood on my left shoulder and my mum was stood in the corner and he was trembling and the doctors told me that I had leukaemia and the first thing I remember saying was, \u2018Am I going to die?\u2019\u201d<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Over the next two years, Anie underwent chemotherapy, antibody therapy and repeated hospital treatment. At one point, she dropped to just five stone.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Eventually, doctors told her a stem cell transplant was her best chance of survival.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">But finding a donor match proved difficult.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cOne of my friends in the bay next to me &#8211; she was a white girl &#8211; and she was told she would need a stem cell transplant and the next day the doctors came to her and said that she had four 10 out of 10 matches on the register,\u201d Anie said.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cShe could basically pick and choose and she was going to survive. But I looked at the calendar and I was waiting for over eight months and there was not one match that was over six out of ten for me.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3e10cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"b3e10cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kkltrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_8307.avif\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-13106\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kkltrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_8307.avif 830w, https:\/\/www.kkltrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_8307-300x168.avif 300w, https:\/\/www.kkltrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_8307-768x431.avif 768w, https:\/\/www.kkltrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_8307-600x337.avif 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Anie Hussain with her dad.<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-736270f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"736270f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Patients are more likely to find a stem cell match from somebody with a similar ethnic background, but people from South Asian and Black communities remain underrepresented on donor registers across the UK.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">After months of waiting, Anie finally received a\u00a0<span class=\"n6NlI\">stem cell transplant<\/span>. It was successful.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Charities say many people are still unaware of how straightforward stem cell donation can be.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">Most donations are carried out through a process similar to giving blood, while joining the register usually only requires a simple cheek swab.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">For Anie, increasing the number of people on the stem cell register could mean more families getting the outcome hers did.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cIt\u2019s just so important to sign up,\u201d she said.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cI\u2019m able to show you loads of friends who I\u2019m here with today who have made it because of the stem cell register, but the flip side of that is that I\u2019ve got loads of friends who aren\u2019t here today because they didn\u2019t get those matches.<\/p><p class=\"A8Lwr BVYCX\">\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important.
